Principal's Message


Hello Maverick Class of 2020 and Families,

I hope this letter finds you all healthy and adjusting to the current situation.  This is my favorite time of year as we celebrate our soon-to-be graduates!  Unfortunately, our present reality is going to change the way in which we celebrate. This message is an update on our planning for traditional senior activities and how the reality of COVID-19 may impact the ways in which these traditions occur.

Your teachers are working to provide you with continuous educational opportunities. Your education continues with distance learning. We cannot recommend strongly enough the importance for you to stay engaged academically! Please stay connected with your teachers for assignments and activities by checking your school email daily. If you are not receiving regular updates from the teachers, school or the district, please check your spam folder. 

The Maverick staff still wants to do all we can to honor our graduates.  Seniors - we appreciate you and we are so sorry this pandemic has happened during your senior year. 

Let me try my best to explain where we are as of now. Please know that our understanding of COVID 19 is constantly evolving and things could change as we move forward. I will continue to do my best to keep updating you as we learn and plan with these upcoming unknowns.  The current “stay at home” order for Washington State is in place through May 4.  We expect to hear an update from Governor Inslee and Chris Reykdal regarding year-end school events the first week in May. 

Caps and Gowns:  Distribution planned for May 19

We have been working with Josten’s, your graduation items supplier, and they have developed a system that will allow you to receive your cap, gown, and any other item you purchased in a “drive through” model. More info to come on this but it looks like May 19th will be our day to coordinate this.  More specific information will be coming soon.  

Senior Prom: Originally scheduled for May 23.

Sadly, it is highly unlikely that social distancing measures will allow our prom to occur. With this reality in mind, I am instructing class advisors and officers to cancel prom and work to recover costs we have used for our venue reservation. 

Textbook collection:  Will take place sometime June (more specific information will be coming soon).

Yearbook distribution: The final version of the Yearbook has been submitted to our publisher Herff-Jones and it looks awesome!  Unfortunately, the publisher has had to cease production temporarily due to shelter in place, so it means we will be receiving our yearbooks slightly behind schedule. We are tentatively planning for Yearbook distribution in August. You can still purchase a yearbook through the MHS website if you have not yet done so. 


Senior Recognition Night/Department Awards:  We still plan to celebrate our Seniors as we have done in year’s past with our Senior Awards Night.  Much like commencement, we are going to wait and see what develops in these coming weeks. If needed, we will be moving this event to a virtual platform as well.

Senior Latinx Celebration: We still plan to celebrate our Senior Latinx students.  More information will follow as we develop the details.  

Graduation Commencement Ceremony:  Originally scheduled for June 13th at 3:30 pm

At this point in time, our commencement is scheduled for June 13, which is after the current May 4 “stay at home” order. We are still holding out hope that by June 13, we will be able to proceed with our ceremony as planned.

After May 4, if the order is extended, we will begin plans and communication for a virtual ceremony to be held at the same time on the 13th. All of this is to be determined at this time but we want you to know we are planning and considering all options when it comes to developing a way to celebrate your achievement.

Remember, commencement is a celebration ceremony and not our actual graduation. Whatever happens, if you have met all graduation requirements, you will be mailed your diploma in June. 

In the meantime, please stay engaged with your classes and your counselor. If you have any questions or worries about how you will meet your graduation requirements please be in touch with your counselor as soon as possible. We are here to support you and are very proud of all you have done and are doing.

Baccalaureate and Grad Night Party:  Both are parent sponsored events and planners should be getting information out about those events.
